On Wednesday 8th May, Stage 3 departed at 7:00 am to go to Canberra. After 2 hours on the road, we had a break in a small town called Mittagong. We ate our snack and we played games. It took 2 hours to get to Canberra. We went to the Australian War Memorial. We studied about the world wars. We also went into the Unknown Soldier tomb. We went to the museum of democracy (Old Parliament House). We learned how to vote.

After we visited Old Parliament House we went to our motel. The students went into different rooms. In our room we had Jonathan, Arkan, Andre, Aston and Hien. We took a shower at the motel. After we took a shower we ate dinner. We had lasagne for dinner and Arkan had vegetable spring roll. After we ate our dinner we had chocolate cake and vanilla ice cream. Then we went back to our rooms.

On our last day, we went to Geo Science and the CSIRO. We did lots of experiments and used microscopes to magnify small things like insects.

We had an awesome time!

Weeding

Parents, please feel free to assist the children in the weeding of our garden. There is quite a lot of growth around the bottom of the garden beds, mostly grasses that need pulling up.

Leaves and pine needles

The native trees in our garden are not friends of our fruit and vegetables. While you are enjoying a walk around the beds, please throw out any of the eucalypt leaves or pine needles that find their way there.

Eggshells!

We are noticing fungus growing amongst our vegetables. To combat this, we ask that children bring in eggshells. Apparently adding eggshells will help add calcium to the soil. We have placed a pot marked “eggshells” beside the whiteboard. Please drop them in!

Sign

We are developing ways of informing you of news and ways in which you can help in the garden. We have secured a whiteboard against the fence as a short-term measure for this purpose.

Being too picky!

Finally, most of our produce is not ready to pick and we are creating a system to inform children and parents what can be picked and when. Please support us by reinforcing to the children that teachers will tell them when they are able to pick fruit and vegetables from the garden. Thank you.

This week the students from years one to six commenced their swimming lessons. During the first lesson all students were tested for their swimming ability and will be placed in an appropriate ability based group. They also practised some water safety techniques such as floating on their backs.

There will be no swimming lesson next week as we are having the swimming carnival on Friday 22nd February. It would be great to see as many students wearing a school swim cap, displaying their house colour, for the crowd to see.

The next swimming lesson will be in week 5, on 26th February.
